The Mire of Sarkay

A poison swamp inspired by the works of Hidetaka Miyazaki PDF and EPub can be found for free at yuigaron.itch.io , along with other games, modules and supplements of mine. What is This Firstly, this is for any GM who, like Miyazaki himself, loves to make poisonous swamps and just cannot help themselves.  Secondly, this is a region to be placed within any map that needs a poison swamp. If placed upon a hex map, the hexes are not required for traversal and only indicate the space it occupies. The space this region occupies is unmapped and mysterious. It is also slow to traverse, so need not take up much room. Lastly, this is built upon the procedure laid out in the post Flux Space by Nick LS Whelan and requires the rules presented therein. Theme Once the site of a great civilisation, now only the peaks of long fallen ruins remain above the sludge; thick grot drags at your feet, sapping at your will, threatening to drown those who do not traverse with care. The mud gets everywhere, w...

Mörktober Week 02

Image
We're at day 14 of Mörktober and I'm sick as a pig! Managed to catch a cold—I think whilst running a game of Mörk Borg this weekend in fact—and it is currently setting my brain on fire in the entirely bad way. So—forgive me for being brief—but here is how the week went. Day 08 - Tome Day 09 - Veil Day 09 was the first (and so far only) day where I failed to manage completing my idea, but the form is there. I will come back to this at some point in the month, if not after. Day 10 - Bats Day 11 - Thirteen Day 12 - Serpent Day 13 - Chains I think this was the day that my cold started to affect my energy, even if it wasn't causing any outward symptoms yet. I just needed something quick and thought I was burning out. Turns out I was burning up. Day 14 - Tomb And the final day of the second week (is it weird ending this on a Monday?) I'd like to get a bit more done with the spacing of the text, but for now my brain says no, mostly because it is on fire. On to the third week ...

Mörktober Day 02 - Fangs

Not much to add today. I wanted to do so much more with this one, but this is where I'm going to have to leave it. It's to connect with the next two days prompts, so it serves as a prelude.

Mörktober 01 - Skeleton

Image
Today marks the beginning of Mörktober 2024 , an annual feast of rotten ideas created by the Mörk Borg community initiated by Exeunt Press. Each day, create something—anything—based on the prompts given by Exeunt Press over on their website . The first days prompt is Skeleton. This year, as well as the Mörktober prompts, Exeunt Press is hosting a puzzle hunt game called Doom Quest over on their itchio page.  " DOOM QUEST is a MÖRKTOBER puzzle hunt. If this is your first puzzle hunt, it can be tricky to get started. Figuring out how and where to begin is part of the fun. Note that it is impossible to solve the puzzle with only An Offering of Sweet Honey! You need the weekly clues as well. Clues will be posted each week starting with Tuesday, October 1, 2024." So, will you be joining me and many others in birthing horrible things for this month of Mörktober? Use the hashtag Mörktober wherever you can, and don't forget to join the official Mörk Borg discord server to see m...

Add Odd Creatures to Your Games, Not Just Stats

A Slight Preamble One thing I have come to love about simple, rules light systems is how easy it is to port creatures and monsters (as well as other things, such as classes or arcanum/magic items/relics/etc) between games.   So much so that, to be honest, when I write a creature up now I hardly do it with stats in mind: that comes later, either at the table or in the prep just before. I much more prefer to write about the creatures themselves. This often keeps my mind from wandering too far into the land of combat capabilities, and keeps me grounded in thoughts like how do they hunt,  or how do they avoid their predators, or how do they procreate?  These questions often lead me to much more interesting creatures with hazards, not attacks and defences per se. Six Such Creatures Feeling a little restless earlier today whilst waiting for food to arrive I decided to grab some dice, several books with roll tables (a mix of Knave 2e, Trophy Dark, Shadowdark, and Cairn 2e, ...

A Hundred Rooms for a Hundred Dungeons, Part 1

So, here it is; the first blog post of what I can only hope will be many. I've been meaning to set one of these up for a while now, but was unconvinced that I had anything worth adding to the vast pool of ideas the OSR and TRPG space is made of.  I remain unconvinced, to be fair, but why the hell not, hmm? I had already written and posted this first set of 6 rooms that will one day be the titular Hundred over on yuigaron.itch.io  but Josh McCrowell of  Rise Up Comus and Clayton Notestine of Explorers Design  both sold me on the idea of first writing these down in a blog to collate later for itch; a much easier way of managing the concept. So, what is A Hundred Rooms for a Hundred Dungeons? My answer to my depression, writer block, and general anxiety over writing and design this last year following burn out. Fun. Despite that being the actual truth it's not all that helpful in describing what I'm doing. A Hundred Rooms for a Hundred Dungeons is a growing collection—...
